Exhibition Essay
Sidae Yeogwan is a former inn in the narrow alleys of Changsin-dong, Seoul, with a history dating back to the 1940s. The building still carries traces of its past. Today, its walls are full of openings, and much of what remains is its structural framework and exterior. No longer functioning as an inn, the building has lost the clear boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. It is in this setting that Choi Ju Yeon's exhibition Betwixt and Between takes place from December 2 to 12.
Choi Ju Yeon creates media-based works using sculptural objects, often modeling the faces of people she knows in wax. Wax can be hard or soft, hold its shape or gradually disappear. These changing qualities reflect the fragile and unpredictable nature of human existence. The wax faces of people she knows appear smooth, opaque, and pale. The artist projects moving images of the same individuals onto these sculptures, which are constantly changing and never entirely stable. The projected images form a thin layer over the surface of each face, almost like a mask. Even as the wax burns, melts, and eventually loses its form, the projected image does not disappear. Instead, it changes along with the sculpture, remaining visible as the physical form transforms.
As we move through life, we encounter countless people and discover different sides of ourselves through these relationships. In this sense, life may be understood as a journey toward discovering who we truly are. Yet the search for our true identity takes place in the uncertain space between our inner selves and the way we appear to others. Sidae Yeogwan, with its blurred boundaries between inside and outside and its visible traces of time, offers a setting for exploring this relationship. Through the exhibition, viewers are invited to consider the subtle space between the self and the persona we present to the world.
