Artist’s Statement

I Am Conscious of the Gaze.

The way I see myself, the way others see me, the way I see others, and the way others see themselves are all different. Sometimes, how I see myself aligns with how others see me; at other times, the two are entirely different. Then what is my true self? Is it the self that exists in relation to others, or the self that is free from their gaze? When the way I perceive myself differs greatly from how others see me, I feel a sense of disconnection from this other side of myself. I become conscious of my own gaze and the gaze of others. This awareness never ceases. Whether consciously or unconsciously, I am always aware of being observed. As a result, I refine and present myself more carefully. I live behind a layer of persona, shaped by how I see myself and how others see me.

When I see myself wearing a mask, I often feel insincere. Finding myself smiling when I cannot genuinely smile makes me aware of how conscious I am of myself and others. In awkward or uncomfortable situations, when I must continue smiling, my face grows flushed, my body becomes exhausted, and I feel as though my face is expanding endlessly. My conscious mind recognizes only my face, my expression, while remaining unaware of my body's reactions. It is a moment when the conscious face and the unconscious body coexist. In that moment, I am reduced to an enlarged face, stripped of free will and carelessly thrown onto the ground.
